Problem
First-time filers cannot tell which ITR form or tax regime to pick, miss deductions, and have no expert to catch mistakes.
What I did
Ran 6 interviews and surveys, synthesized JTBD and affinity maps, designed 14+ screens in Figma and built an AI-assisted prototype.
Result
A guided flow aimed at the biggest confusion points. It is a concept, so there is no usage data yet.
The problem
First-time filers get stuck at the same points.
-
Don't know which ITR form to use
-
Confused: Old Regime or New Regime?
-
Miss deductions they are eligible for
-
No expert around when doubts hit
-
Don't trust "free" and fear hidden costs
I want a platform that guides me like an expert would, without hidden costs.
User need
Primary users. Salaried, first-time DIY filers in India, 22 to 40.
Research participants. 6 first-time and early-stage DIY filers, interviewed and surveyed to validate real filing behaviour.
Approach. A solo research-to-prototype process. I ran the interviews, synthesized patterns into JTBD and problem statements, then moved into wireframes and an AI-assisted prototype.

Build filing confidence
Move users from anxious to independent.
Cut CA dependency
Simple returns should not need an expert.
Earn trust
Users trust clear pricing more than a known brand.
My role
Solo product designer and researcher, from research through prototype. AI-assisted and mentor-reviewed.
Discovery and decisions
-
Ran 6 user interviews and surveys
-
Synthesized findings into JTBD, affinity maps and problem statements
-
Defined scope and target user
Design and delivery
-
Designed the full flow, 14+ screens, in Figma
-
Built an interactive prototype with AI (Claude, Figma Make)
-
Owned every research, scope and design decision. AI sped up execution, not judgment
Research
I interviewed and surveyed first-time DIY filers to find where confidence actually breaks down, not just which tool they use.
-
Confusion peaks at two moments: picking the right ITR form and choosing a tax regime
-
Users know some deductions exist but not all they are eligible for
-
They don't want full automation. They want a guide, not a black box
-
Upfront cost transparency matters more than brand name

Outcomes
A self-initiated project to test whether AI-guided decisions could replace the missing expert in the room for first-time filers. It is validated through research and not yet shipped.
Top confusion points targeted
Research-backed design addresses the two biggest problems: ITR form selection and regime choice.
A gap users named
Pre-submission AI checks respond to having no one to catch mistakes before filing.
Trust blocker addressed
Upfront pricing transparency targets the strongest trust blocker found in interviews.
